CANOPY

Summer 2025

Concept

Ideate and create a community-driven app that encourages users to get outside and join mental health support groups.

Problem
Mental health is a growing topic and concern in the present day, along with rising concerns of a “loneliness epidemic” where people are preferring online relationships over in-person ones.

Support groups allow people to talk to others who have gone through similar issues. They are also a great way to become involved in a small community.

The average American's screen time is 7 hours, and over 60% of adults spend less than 5 hours outside.

Approach

Research and define personas to best represent the target audience, along with underrepresented groups. Gathered benchmarks of similar apps to understand the current field of mental health and event apps.

Personas
    - Healthcare professionals have a range of 20% to 42% chance of developing depression based on their specialty, and 25% of mental health workers struggle with depression.
    - Younger generations have a higher mental health literacy than older generations
    - Only 35% of men report mental health struggles compared to 50% women

Sketches

Iterated on page layouts for two task flows, developing the overall hierarchy to be straightforward and simple to understand.
explore page,  map, filter
group page, group page 2, event details
Calendar 1 + 2
Saved groups (your community), Saved group page

Wire Frames (mid-fi)

Organized information and buttons according to Information Architecture Principles. Differentiate event containers vs. group containers to ensure minimal confusion. Selected icons that made the most sense, while also being unique to Canopy.

Wire Frames (high-fi)

Solidified aesthetics based on the research conducted. Paid attention to how color was used to allow users with vision issues to see the hierarchy clearly and understand the system.

Task Flows

Prototyped and featured task flows that best exemplified the purpose of Canopy. Canopy is focused on getting people to explore their local green spaces and find new groups. Included an onboarding flow to allow the brand's identity to show.
Task flow 1.1 : Find an event through the map, sign up, and see it in the calendar.
Task flow 1.2 : Join a group through group page, and navigate to Group Hub.
On boarding flow: linear progression

Style Guide

Green represents growth, peace, and comfort, so it became a strong candidate for primary colors. To create a mature feeling, I paired a sans-serif with a serif typeface. Added a dark redish color to contrast with warning buttons and announcements.
